The AnandTech Podcast: Episode 2

This week Brian Klug, Ryan Smith and myself discussed Thunderbolt, Quick Sync in OS X, Windows 8/RT, the current state of the mobile SoC landscape and finally we put Ryan's talents to good use and went over his picks for the best graphics cards on the market today. We went to a slightly longer format for this episode and ended up clocking in at 1 hour and 31 minutes.
Our goal is to make this a weekly affair, with Monday as the targeted publication date for the podcasts. The podcast is now available via iTunes as well as RSS feeds for both the MP3 and M4A versions. Links to everything are below.

In podcast 2 (41min) Brian commented he wants to see high dpiThe tradeoff with high dpi is you have less desktop area which is especially critical for mobile devices.
High DPI is nice but do people really want to scroll more, on a TINY device than a larger low dpi device such as a laptop ? (for some content such as websites)
Anand relays this concept at 43mins.
Put an infinity transformer side by side with a 1280x800 laptop showing the same webpage and judge for yourself with real content.. I did. I wasnt very happy.
Great for 'apps' but real universal content...
I think qualilty isnt that critical on a tiny portable device despite arguments about viewing distance but we are getting to a point where our large desktop displays have larger canvases but lower ppi/dpi.
The mass market just comment on if a screen is clear (bright/contrasty/viewing angles) rather than any detailed icons or dpi
What do you all [the anandtech community] feel about this direction.

If a Transformer next to a (presumably Windows) laptop is the basis of your judgement, then unfortunately you haven't seen a good HiDPI setup in action. What you should do is look at Apple devices like the iPad 3, iPhone 4, or rMBP that implement a proper HiDPI screen and software stack.If it's done right, you don't see any of those issues you ran into. The ultimate purpose of HiDPI isn't to make things smaller, but rather to make things clearer. That means running "legacy" applications with pixel doubling (to bring them up to the right size) while drawing fonts in greater clarity at their native resolution, while native applications will know how many pixels to use to target their desired size right off the bat.

the demand for 2560x1440 korean monitors isn't driven by a sudden demand for 'quality' or IPS or anything else, just a pure demand for resolution.After years of no affordable options beyond 1920x1080, there was a huge pent-up demand from those who demanded more but couldn't spend $1000 on a higher res monitor.
These come in and help fill in that massive hole between 1920x1080 consumer monitors and higher resolution professional monitors.
